New Delhi, Dec 29 (.) At close, the Sensex was down 345.91 points or 0.41% at 84,695.54, and the Nifty was down 100.2 points or 0.38% at 25,942.10. BSE Midcap index declined 0.45% and BSE Smallcap lost 0.50%.
Among the sectors, Nifty Media rose 0.93%, Nifty FMCG was up 0.11% and Nifty PSU Bank was up 0.05%. Further, Nifty IT and Nifty Bank indices lost the most, shedding 0.75% and 0.53%, respectively.
On Nifty 50, seventeen stocks closed in the green while 33 stocks ended with cuts.
Those on the green were Tata Steel, Tata Consumer, Asian Paints, Grasim, and Nestle India. Adani Ports was the top loser declining 2.27%. HCL Tech, Power Grid, Trent and Adani Enterprises closed with losses of over 1% each.
On BSE, over 100 stocks hit 52-week high while more than 180 stocks touched their 52-week low.
Those on the highs were Hindustan Copper, Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta, City union Bank, MCX India, Titan Company, NALCO, NMDC, Hindalco Industries, Eicher Motors, Craftsman, among others.
While on lows included Dixon Technologies, PCBL Chemicals, Clean Science, ACC, Happiest Minds, Colgate Palmolive, Poly Medicure, Vedant Fashions, among others.
The rupee traded in a weak range near the 90 mark as the U.S. holiday season kept the dollar index subdued.
Railway stocks witnessed profit booking. Indian Railway Finance Corporation fell 5.5%, Rail Vikas Nigam and Ircon International, also fell 5.4% and 3.2%, respectively.
Shares of metal companies snapped a seven session gaining streak with heavyweights like Hindustan Zinc, NMDC and others falling up to 3%.
