Kangra, Jan 4 (.) The First Kangra International Open FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Tournament was inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) Vice Chairman Ajay Verma. This is the first edition of an international-level FIDE-rated chess tournament being held in Kangra, featuring a total prize money of Rs 2.5 lakh.
The tournament is being organised under the aegis of the Himachal Pradesh State Chess Association. Members of the organising committee welcomed the chief guest by presenting him with a memento.
Addressing the gathering, Ajay Verma extended his best wishes to the organisers and players, saying, “Sports play a vital role in life, and those who make sports a part of their routine remain physically and mentally healthy and happy.”
He encouraged everyone to adopt at least one sport in their life to maintain overall well-being.
Verma said sports have emerged as an effective means for youth to build a bright future. He lauded the state government for making a historic increase in the cash awards for players winning medals at the international level and expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
He further added, “Players in the state are now getting better reservation benefits in education and jobs at both national and international levels, which is encouraging more youth to take up sports.”
Highlighting the social importance of sports, Verma said that games also play a crucial role in keeping youth away from drug abuse. He expressed confidence that the chess tournament in Kangra would provide a strong platform for young players to showcase their talent and move forward in their sporting careers.
More than 350 players, including two international-level players, are participating in the tournament. The chief guest also contributed Rs 11,000 from his personal side to support the event.
Among those present on the occasion were Kangra Chess Club Chairman Amit Verma, District President Sanjay Kumar, Secretary Deepak Chug, Sudarshan, Ajay Jamwal, Praveen Shastri, Anil Sharma, Ayush Sharma, and several players.
