Belgrade, Jan 5 (.) Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic has announced his decision to step away completely from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), citing concerns over transparency, governance, and the manner in which his voice and image have been represented.
In a post shared on X, Djokovic said the decision followed “careful consideration,” adding that while he remained proud of the vision behind founding the organisation, his values were no longer aligned with its current direction.
“I am proud of the vision that Vasek and I shared when founding the PTPA, giving players a stronger, independent voice – but it has become clear that my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organization,” he wrote.
Djokovic said he would now focus on his tennis, family, and contributing to the sport in ways that reflect his principles and integrity. “I wish the players and those involved the best as they move forward, but for me, this chapter is now closed,” he added.
The announcement comes months after the PTPA filed a class-action lawsuit in March 2025 against the ATP, WTA, International Tennis Federation, and the sport’s integrity agency, alleging “systemic abuse, anti-competitive practices and a blatant disregard for player welfare.”
The four Grand Slam tournaments were later added as defendants in the case.
The lawsuit raised concerns over what it described as an unsustainable 11-month playing calendar and claimed that prize money is capped while players’ commercial earning potential is restricted. Djokovic, notably, was not listed as a plaintiff in the legal action.
Djokovic co-founded the PTPA with Canadian player Vasek Pospisil during the 2020 US Open, with the stated aim of representing professional tennis players as independent contractors in a largely individual sport and strengthening their collective voice within the game’s governance structure.
