Dhaka, Jan 5 (.) A Bangladeshi Hindu businessman was shot dead and his throat slit by some assailants in Jessore’s Manirampur area.
The incident took place in Kapalia market of the upazila on Monday evening, and comes close on the heels of the hacking and burning of another Hindu businessman, Khokan Chandra Das, in Damudya upazila of Shariatpur.
Khokan, who ran a drug store in Keurbhanga market along with a mobile banking business in his shop, was attacked by three known persons on December 31 while he was returning home from his shop. He was hacked by the assailants who then poured petrol on him and set him on fire. He died on Saturday.
On Monday evening, Rana Pratap Bairagi (38), who owned an ice making factory in Kapalia Bazar, Manirampur, was shot dead at close range and his throat slit.
Rana Pratap Bairagi, the son of Tushar Kanti Bairagi of Arua village in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore, was also the acting editor of a newspaper named ‘Dainik BD Khabar’ published from Narail.
According to locals and police, Rana Pratap Bairagi was at his ice mill in Kapalia Bazar of Manirampur Upazila when he was called by three people on a motorcycle who took him to the street in front of Kapalia Clinic and Diagnostic Center. The miscreants then shot him in the head at close range and fled. He died on the spot.
Immediately after the incident, extreme panic spread among the common people in Kapalia Bazar and surrounding areas. On receiving the information, the police reached the spot from Manirampur police station.
According to police, Rana Pratap Bairagi had a case filed against him in Abhaynagar police station as well as three cases in Keshavpur police station.
However, the details of these cases were not immediately known.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Manirampur Police Station said that Rana Pratap Bairagi was killed by three shots in the head and his throat was cut. The officer said that preparations are underway to recover the body and send it to Jessore’s 250-bed general hospital morgue for post-mortem.
The OC also said that the reason for his murder is not known. They are also investigating who committed the murder. Legal action is under process in this regard.
