Los Angeles, Jan 5 (.) William H. Macy has lifted the veil on Dan Fogelman’s NFL drama, conformity both the title and the setting of the series during an appearance at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Macy initially toed the party line, replying, “I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you,” when Deadline’s Antonia Blyth asked him about the show on the red carpet at the Critics’ Choice Awards, where he was representing the movie Train Dreams.
He went on to reveal the long-rumored but never confirmed title and setting of the series, reports DEADLINE.
“It’s about a football team, nominally the Cleveland Browns. It’s called The Land because that’s what people from Cleveland call it. I play the owner of the team,” Macy said. “They’re brilliant scripts. They’re Shakespearean. It’s about football, but, oh, my lord, the plots are so profound, and I’m having the time of my life.”
When asked if the series bears similarities to Friday Night Lights, Macy acknowledged the comparison, suggesting that while the show shares a grounded emotional core, ig also ventures into more complex and far-reaching territory.
Created and penned by Fogelman, the drama explores the inner mechanics of the NFL while anchoring its story in a multi-generational family framework. The drama will premiere only on Hulu.
Chris Meloni leads the cast as the team’s head coach Danny, with fellow series regulars Sam Corlett and Tanner Zagarino as his sons, Macy as the team owner Hank, Mandy Moore and Chloe Bennet as Hank’s daughters, and Chace Crawford as the team’s new General Manager.
“The NFL is completely behind our show, so we’ve got complete access,” Macy said. “I’m optimistic it’s going to be something. And what if Cleveland starts winning? Because I think our team is going to do better.”
