Oslo, Jan 13 (.) One of the world’s most prestigious chess tournaments, Norway Chess, will enter a new phase from 2026 as the event relocates from Stavanger to Oslo after 13 years, as per the release by Norway Chess.
The tournament, along with Norway Chess Women, will be staged at Deichman Bjørvika in the Norwegian capital from May 25 to June 5, 2026.
Since its inception in 2013, Stavanger has been the permanent home of Norway Chess, helping establish it as a key fixture on the international chess calendar. The organisers acknowledged the city’s role in shaping the tournament’s identity, particularly in supporting the launch of Norway Chess Women, which offers equal prize money and playing conditions.
“Norway Chess would not have become the event it is today without the cross-party political support and the generous welcome we have received in Stavanger. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the City of Stavanger, which has stood by us all the way, especially in the development of Norway Chess Women, a pioneering women’s tournament with equal prize conditions. We also want to thank our local sponsors and the incredible volunteers. Together you have written a chapter of Norwegian sporting history,” says Kjell Madland, founder and CEO of Norway Chess.
“We see great opportunities in establishing Norway Chess in the nation’s capital. Oslo is an international meeting place and gives us a unique opportunity to reach an even wider audience, among spectators, partners, and new generations of chess enthusiasts,” says Benedicte Westre Skog, COO of Norway Chess.
Deichman Bjørvika, one of Oslo’s landmark public spaces, will serve as the main venue for both the men’s and women’s events. The library’s management welcomed the decision, highlighting its role as a cultural venue that brings together diverse activities and audiences.
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has confirmed his participation in the 2026 edition, continuing his association with the tournament he has played in since its debut.
Carlsen has won Norway Chess seven times and remains one of its central figures. The full list of participants for both tournaments is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
The 2026 edition will mark the 14th staging of Norway Chess and the third edition of Norway Chess Women, underlining the tournament’s continued growth as it begins its Oslo chapter.
