New Delhi, Jan 14 (.) Amidst protests and a mounting death toll in Iran, India on Wednesday advised its citizens currently in Iran to leave the country as soon as possible, citing a rapidly evolving security situation amid mounting regional tensions and widespread protests.
The advisory, issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran, asked Indian nationals, including students, pilgrims, business people and tourists, to depart using any available means of transportation, including commercial flights.
It follows an earlier government notice issued on January 5 urging caution. “In view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport,” the embassy said in a statement.
The Ministry of External Affairs also renewed its warning against travel to Iran, advising Indians to avoid visiting the country “until further notice.”
This comes as US President Donald Trump said he may “take strong action” after reports suggested that more than 2,500 people may have died in onoging protests in Iran against the current regime.
Those Indian citizens still in Iran were urged by the Indian government to remain vigilant, steer clear of areas affected by protests or demonstrations, and closely monitor official updates from the embassy. Indian officials said embassy helplines had been activated to assist citizens seeking help or information, and advised those remaining in the country to register with diplomatic authorities without delay.
The renewed advisory comes as Iran faces intensifying internal unrest. Rights groups and media reports have said that the death toll from government action against protesters has risen sharply in recent weeks, heightening concerns about safety and stability. Indian officials said they were closely monitoring developments.
India has periodically issued travel advisories for the region, but the latest notice reflects growing concern in New Delhi over the deteriorating security environment and the risks faced by foreign nationals.
