New Delhi, Jan 18 (.) In a significant development, US President Donald Trump has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the Gaza Board of Peace.
The news was conveyed by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who posted on his X account the White House letter inviting PM Modi.
Gor wrote on his X handle:
“Honored to convey @POTUS invitation to Prime Minister @narendramodi to participate in the Board of Peace which will bring lasting peace to Gaza. The Board will support effective governance to achieve stability and prosperity!”
The letter reads:
“Dear Mr Prime Minister, It is my great honour to invite you, as Prime Minister of the Republic of India, to join me in a critically historic and magnificent effort to solidify peace in the Middle East and, at the same time, to embark on a bold new approach to resolving the Global Conflict!”
Referring to his 20-point roadmap announced to end the Gaza conflict on September 29 last year, Trump said that in furtherance of the plan, on November 17 the UN Security Council had overwhelmingly adopted Resolution 2803 welcoming and endorsing the plan.
“Now it is time to turn all of these Dreams into reality. At the heart of the Plan is the Board of Peace, the most impressive and consequential Board ever assembled, which will be established as a new International Organization and Transitional Governing Administration.
“Our effort will bring together a distinguished group of nations, ready to shoulder the noble responsibility of building LASTING PEACE, an Honour reserved for those prepared to lead by example, and brilliantly invest in a secure and prosperous future for generations to come. We will convene our wonderful and committed partners, most of whom are Highly Respected World Leaders, in our near future.”
Around 50 countries have been invited to join the Gaza Board of Peace, including Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Pakistan, Jordan, Greece, Cyprus, Canada, Paraguay, Argentina and Albania.
The US is expected to announce its official list of members in the coming days, likely during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
Those on the board will oversee the next steps in Gaza as the ceasefire that took effect on October 10 last year moves into its second phase — which includes forming a new Palestinian committee in Gaza, the deployment of an international security force there, disarmament of Hamas and reconstruction of the war-battered territory.
The White House last week also announced an executive committee of leaders who will carry out the Board of Peace’s vision. Its members include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, World Bank President Ajay Banga and Trump’s deputy national security adviser Robert Gabriel, along with an Israeli business owner, billionaire Yakir Gabay.
