Spain, Jan 19 (.) Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said on Monday that the number of fatalities from a major train derailment in the province of Cordoba might increase, potentially surpassing the currently confirmed death toll of 39.
“I am already in Cordoba and heading to the accident site. The death toll has already reached 39 and is not yet final,” Puente wrote on X.
The minister also expressed his gratitude to emergency services for their work in difficult nighttime conditions.
The accident occurred around 7:45 pm local time (18:45 GMT) on Sunday when a train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and veered onto an adjacent track. On that track, a train traveling from Madrid to Huelva was also derailed in the collision.
The Russian Embassy in Spain informed Sputnik that it had not received any information about Russian citizens being among the victims of the train crash.
The death toll in a high-speed train collision in southern Spain has reached 39, while 152 others have been injured. Authorities confirmed that Spain has witnessed its worst rail crash in more than a decade, involving two high-speed trains.
Carriages on a Madrid-bound train derailed and crossed over to the opposite tracks, colliding with an oncoming train in Adamuz, near the city of Córdoba.
According to the rail network, around 400 passengers and staff were on board the two trains.
The accident occurred around 7.40 pm local time (1840GMT) when a train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed near Adamuz, Cordoba, and encroached onto an adjacent track. This caused a second train heading south from Madrid to Huelva to derail as well.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente confirmed on the US social media company X that the first two wagons of the second train were “thrown off” the tracks, acknowledging that reports from the scene were “very grave.”
