Melbourne, Jan 23 (.) Daniil Medvedev produced a stirring comeback to reach the fourth round of the 2026 Australian Open, rallying from two sets down to defeat Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in a five-set thriller on Friday.
The former world No. 1 prevailed 6-7(5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3 in a contest lasting three hours and 43 minutes, registering his fifth career comeback from two sets to love down and his fourth such recovery at Melbourne Park, as per the ATP official website.
Medvedev appeared on the brink of elimination before earning a decisive break at 5-5 in the third set, a moment that dramatically shifted the momentum. From there, the 11th seed went on a dominant run, winning nine consecutive games to seize control and eventually close out the match.
“He played great, and I was like, ‘If I lose, I lose’, but I’m just going to try, I’m just going to fight,” Medvedev said in his on-court interview. “I tried to go for it a bit more because he was moving me all around. It managed to work; I started playing better, so I’m happy about it.”
The three-time Australian Open finalist has begun the 2026 season in strong form, extending his winning streak to eight matches, which includes a title-winning run at the ATP 250 event in Brisbane earlier this month.
Medvedev will next face American Learner Tien, who defeated Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-6(9), 6-4, 6-2 to advance.
