Davos, Jan 22 (.) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed in his Davos speech that the “first trilateral meeting” between the US, Ukraine and Russia will take place in the UAE, on Friday and Saturday.
The US will be represented by US President Donald Trump’s top envoys Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner in the United Arab Emirates.
Russia will be represented by Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev and its head of military intelligence, according to a report.
Witkoff and Kushner both joined Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, and the US president sent the pair to Moscow ahead of the meeting.
“[The] American team will go to Moscow today. They waited for our meeting with President Trump, and now they will go, and my team will meet [the] American team and I think that it will be the first trilateral meeting in the Emirates,” Zelensky said without explicitly mentioning Russia’s participation in the upcoming negotiations.
Neither Moscow nor Washington have confirmed the “imminent” three-way talks.
The United Arab Emirates has not made any official statements regarding the announcement either. The idea of holding trilateral talks between Moscow, Kiev, and Washington at various levels of representation has been a consistent element amid the efforts of US President Donald Trump to settle the hostilities.
Later, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine clinched agreements on a new air defence package during meetings at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
“We are returning home with agreements on a new package of critically needed air defence for the protection of our people,” he wrote on social media.
Earlier this week, Zelenskyy criticised his air force’s defence against Russian drones, describing efforts as “unsatisfactory”: “The performance of the air force against the Shaheds is unsatisfactory, we have interceptors, significant forces are engaged, mobile fire groups, F-16s are available – but the organisation of air force operations must be different.”
