New Delhi, Jan 27 (.) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led administration in Delhi is creating new garbage mountains, transforming the capital into a “cancer capital” and endangering public health through contaminated groundwater and air.
At a press conference, AAP’s Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that waste from the Bhalswa landfill is being transported and dumped in the Kirari area. He stated that this plastic and chemical-laden waste is polluting the soil, air, and groundwater, posing severe health risks, including cancer, to the predominantly Purvanchali residents who rely on tube-well water.
Bharadwaj accused the BJP government of engaging in a “farziwada” or fraud to create an illusion of reducing the Bhalswa landfill, a problem he attributed to the BJP’s long tenure controlling the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. He played videos from a visit to Kirari, showing extensive dumping on Delhi Development Authority (DDA) land, with waste piled several feet high and visible plastic debris.
The AAP leader directly challenged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, asking why the waste was not being dumped at their official residences if it was considered harmless. He drew parallels with previous allegations of fraud regarding Yamuna pollution and air quality monitoring.
Bharadwaj warned that leachate from the dumped waste would permanently pollute groundwater, leading to severe respiratory and other diseases. He urged journalists and environmental experts to visit the site to assess the situation independently.
“Chief Minister Gupta had said, “Koode ke pahaad, tujhko jaana padega bhai” (Garbage mountain, you will have to go), “We know where this is going. The Delhi government is relocating the problem from Bhalswa to Kirari,” Bhardwaj said. . ATK SAS KK
