Tokyo, Jan. 29 (.) Japan’s weather agency said on Thursday that heavy snow is expected to fall in northeastern and western areas along the Sea of Japan coast through Friday, warning of possible disruptions in transportation.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said a cold air mass is expected to flow into the archipelago and a strong winter pressure pattern to persist through Friday, bringing heavy snowfall mainly on the Sea of Japan side of northern and western Japan.
It said snow is also likely to intensify in areas where it is rarely seen along the Pacific coast in eastern Japan, including Tokyo, as well as in western Japan through Friday.
The agency urged residents to take extra caution against slippery roads, snow falling from roofs and possible avalanches. In the 24 hours through 6 a.m. on Friday, parts of the Hokuriku region in central Japan are expected to see snowfall of up to 70 centimeters, while the Kinki region in the west and Tohoku in the northeast could see 60 cm and 50 cm, respectively, according to the agency.
