Agartala, Jan 30 (.) The Indian Golf union (IGU) has announced a Northeast Golf League (NEGL) akin to the IPL of Cricket exclusively for the Northeast, featuring sponsors and Team Owners bidding for players.
This initiative aims to enhance the visibility of the game through live telecasts and generate interest in golf within the region, a concept that has been enthusiastically received by golfers in the region.
IGU reaffirmed its dedication to the advancement of golf in the Northeast region, following a series of meetings between IGU Director General (CEO), Maj Gen Bhibhuti Bhusan, and his team with the State Golf Associations of the area this week, Tripura Golf Association Secretary Sushanta Debbarma said here today.
During the brainstorming sessions at IGU office in Delhi, the focus was on considering factors such as distance, the availability of talent, and the presence of golf courses in Northeast.
A comprehensive plan of action has been devised to facilitate the optimal development of golf in Northeast, with a specific emphasis on leveraging the abundant talent pool in the region, he stated.
In a significant move, IGU has announced the establishment of a dedicated NE Feeder Tour exclusively for the Northeast region, providing a pathway for players from the region to enter the Main Tour, earn National Ranking, and subsequently represent the country in international events, including the Olympics.
The formation of a NE Golf Coordination Committee comprising representatives from all state associations has been decided, with the committee tasked to oversee all developmental programmes in the region, and introduction of the game to school children, talent scouting by experienced professionals, and Rules Clinic by internationally acclaimed referees, he added.
IGU has also pledged its full support for the implementation of developmental programmes recommended by this Committee, including the provision of golf sets for underprivileged players, practice golf balls, and a state-of-the-art Launch monitor dedicated for the Northeast, Debbarma said.
