Los Angeles, Jan 30 (.) The producers of S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming action-adventure epic ‘Varanasi’ have detailed the strategy behind the film’s April 7, 2027 theatrical release and its marketing rollout, which began with a cryptic on-ground installation in the holy city of Varanasi, Variety reports.
The project is being produced under the banner of Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business, with K.L. Narayana and S.S. Karthikeya served as producers.
“Varanasi lies at the heart of this film, so beginning the release conversation from the city itself felt instinctive,” producer Karthikeya told Variety.
“The cryptic on-ground installation was intended to spark curiosity, and audiences connected the dots organically.”
According to the producers, the release date was selected to take advantage of a strong theatrical window by aligning with major Indian festivals and public holidays.
“April 7, 2027, sits within the festive period of Ugadi and Gudi Padwa, flows into the weekend, and is followed by Ambedkar Jayanti and Rama Navami, creating a strong extended theatrical window,” Karthikeya said. “It’s a date that perfectly aligns with us and all our stakeholders,” as quoted by Variety.
The film’s narrative spans thousands of years and multiple continents, with locations ranging from Antarctica and Africa to Varanasi. One of the key sequences draws inspiration from a chapter of the Indian epic Ramayana, whose protagonist is the Hindu god Rama. The festival of Rama Navami marks his birth.

Rajamouli’s previous film, RRR, became a global phenomenon following its 2022 release, earning widespread acclaim and international attention. The film’s Academy Awards recognition marked a milestone for Indian cinema, and it stands as the fifth-highest-grossing film in Indian cinema history.
‘Varanasi’ also reunites Rajamouli with Oscar-winning composer M.M. Keeravani, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR.
