New Delhi, Feb 2 (.): Both Houses of Parliament will take up on Monday the Motion of Thanks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address, following the presentation of the union Budget 2026-27 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.
In the Lok Sabha, union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will move the motion, seconded by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, while in the Rajya Sabha, BJP MP C Sadanandan Master will move it, seconded by Medha Vishram Kulkarni. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to reply on February 4, while Finance Minister Sitharaman will respond on February 11.
The Budget Session, which commenced on January 28 with the President’s address to a joint sitting, will span 30 sittings over 65 days, concluding on April 2. The session is structured in phases, with a recess from February 13 to March 9 to allow Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries.
During her address, President Murmu urged MPs to unite on issues of national security, the vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), and the campaign for ‘Swadeshi’, while emphasizing the government’s work toward social justice.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with Congress MPs Tariq Anwar, Amarinder Raja Warring, Anto Antony, and Jothimani, will speak during the Motion of Thanks debate.
The union Budget 2026-27, presented by Nirmala Sitharaman, focuses on “Yuvashakti” and is based on three kartavyas, highlighting seven high-speed rail corridors, new dedicated freight corridors, and the operationalization of 20 national waterways over the next five years. The budget also emphasizes environmentally sustainable passenger transport and regional development.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have sought discussions on issues including the restoration of MGNREGA, the ongoing SIR of poll rolls, and the UGC controversy, ahead of the parliamentary debate.
