Canberra, Feb 3 (.) Australia has imposed new sanctions on 20 individuals and three entities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), accusing them of involvement in the violent crackdown on protests.
“The Australian Government is today imposing further targeted financial sanctions on Iran in response to the regime’s horrific use of violence against its own people,” said a government media release on Tuesday.
“Since 28 December 2025, the regime has massacred thousands of Iranians while attacking and arresting many thousands more for participating in peaceful protest,” Senator Wong said.
“The regime has imposed nationwide internet and telecommunications blackouts in an attempt to conceal the scale of its brutality.”
The Australian government said those sanctioned include senior IRGC officials and entities responsible for violently suppressing domestic protests and threatening lives inside and outside Iran.
Among those named are Iran’s national police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan, a central figure in directing street-level repression, mass arrests, and the use of force against protesters.
Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib, who oversees the security and intelligence apparatus responsible for surveillance, detentions, and interrogations of activists and dissidents, was also sanctioned.
Ali Fazli, a senior IRGC commander and former Basij chief long associated with suppressing protests and coordinating paramilitary forces against demonstrators, was included as well.
Other notable individuals on the list include Mohammad Reza Fallahzadeh, a senior commander in the IRGC’s Quds Force; Mohammad Saleh Jokar, a former commander of student Basij forces; and Yahya Hosseini Panjaki, the intelligence ministry’s deputy for domestic security.
Canberra’s sanctions also targeted the IRGC Cyber Defense Command, involved in online surveillance and information control; IRGC Quds Force Unit 840, a covert unit accused of planning operations against dissidents and foreign targets; and the IRGC Intelligence Organization, which oversees domestic intelligence, arrests and interrogations and plays a central role in suppressing protests inside Iran.
This announcement builds on the Australian Government’s listing of the IRGC as a state sponsor of terrorism and our comprehensive framework of sanctions against Iran.
Today’s action underscores our commitment to standing with the people of Iran alongside international partners against the Iranian regime’s egregious campaign of oppression and destabilisation.
The Albanese Government has now sanctioned more than 200 Iranian individuals and entities and more than 100 IRGC-linked individuals and entities.
Earlier, the United States on Friday announced sweeping new sanctions on Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni Kalagari and several senior Iranian officials, citing their role in the regime’s violent crackdown on nationwide protests.
The US Treasury Department stated that Momeni “oversees the murderous Law Enforcement Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran (LEF), a key entity responsible for the deaths of thousands of peaceful protesters.”
In a statement, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said, “Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) took additional action against Iranian officials responsible for the regime’s brutal crackdown on its own people. Among the officials sanctioned today is Eskandar Momeni Kalagari, Iran’s Minister of the Interior, who oversees the murderous Law Enforcement Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran (LEF), a key entity responsible for the deaths of thousands of peaceful protestors.”
The sanctions also target senior officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iranian businessman Babak Morteza Zanjani, accused of embezzling billions from the Iranian people.
The Treasury also restricted digital currency exchanges linked to Zanjani that handled large volumes of funds associated with IRGC-affiliated entities.
Under the US sanctions, any assets held by the designated individuals or entities in the United States are frozen, and American citizens and companies are prohibited from doing business with them.
