Tehran, Feb 9 (.) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran remains open to “equal and win-win” negotiations with the US, calling the latest round of nuclear talks an opportunity where all parties could reach a fair settlement, provided they refrain from making excessive demands.
“We are seeking guarantees for our rights on lifting unjust sanctions,” Pezeshkian said, stressing that Iran believes “interaction and dialogue are the only way” to address regional and global challenges.
He added that the talks, supported by neighbouring countries, could help resolve disputes “logically” if both sides remain committed to a constructive process.
However, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that while Tehran was seeking “real talks”, any negotiations would depend on the other side’s earnestness, highlighting that despite some progress, talks between Iran and Washington were underscored by a massive trust deficit, making prospects for agreements difficult.
“We are very serious in the negotiations and are looking for real talks to reach results, provided the other side also shows seriousness and readiness for outcome-oriented negotiations,” Araghchi said.
Calling the lack of trust between both nations a central obstacle, he noted that “a wall of distrust toward the United States exists, caused by America’s own behaviour.”
Despite that, Araghchi expressed optimism, hoping that confidence could still be rebuilt. “We hope the necessary confidence can be created so that negotiations can lead to a result,” he said.
Speaking separately to foreign diplomats in the capital, Araghchi acknowledging the slew of many recent domestic difficulties, including an internet shutdown during the mass civil uprising, said the measures were taken for security reasons. “I assure you that all of this was for your own safety and the safety of the people of Iran,” he told the diplomats.
