Tehran, Feb 9 (.) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is set to inspect a number of Iranian nuclear facilities in the coming days, announced Iranian Vice President and head of the country’s Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami on Monday.
“After the war [between Iran and Israel in June 2025, IAEA inspectors] conducted an inspection of facilities that were not attacked, and in the coming days they will inspect a number of other facilities,” Eslami said, as per Tasnim, reports Iran International.
Iran had earlier urged the UN nuclear watchdog to clearly define and codify its framework for inspections, asking the IAEA what measures were to apply “if a country’s nuclear industry, which is under the agency’s supervision, comes under a military attack,” in a reference to the 12-day war with Israel, and later the US back in June last year.
Ever since the heavy devastation of a good deal of Iran’s weapons arsenal, along with missiles and air raids on a lot of the Islamic Republic’s infrastructure, Tehran has been extremely distrustful of the IAEA, particularly after the US bombed the country’s three principle nuclear reactors.
While the bombings failed to destroy its uranium deposits, they did nonetheless succeed in causing strong external damage to the structures, significantly derailing its nuclear programme.
The US-Israeli bombings of its civil and military nuclear infrastructure caused Tehran to briefly sever ties with the body owing to suspicions that it had been supplying enemies with critical nuclear data, though eventually renewed them, though it has denied the agency permission to inspect its three damaged sites of Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
Despite the Islamic Republic’s stated position of no compromises concerning its nuclear programme, Eslami, in a rare gesture, said that Tehran could consider diluting its stockpile of uranium enriched to a massive high of 60%, provided all sanctions were lifted in return, adding that any such step would be tied to guarantees on Iran’s rights.
“The export of uranium is not on the agenda,” he said, adding that suggestions attributed to other countries were “speculation” circulating in media content produced by pressure groups.
