    Hyderabad, Feb 10 (.) The ICAR South Zone sports tournament was inaugurated on Tuesday at the RSC Grounds, Secunderabad, with participation from agricultural research institutions across the southern region.
    Dr B Venkateswarlu, former Vice-Chancellor of Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, inaugurated the tournament as chief guest and declared it open.
    Speaking on the occasion, he underlined the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, noting that the spirit of sports is equally vital in agricultural research and professional life. He also said sports play a key role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
    Ms N Bhavani Sri, IAS, Secretary of the National Turmeric Board, attended as the guest of honour and lauded ICAR personnel for their contribution to the nation’s agricultural sector.
    She encouraged participants to cherish the opportunity, describing the tournament as a rare platform where personnel across all ranks and institutions come together through sports.
    Dr Arun Tiwari, writer, author and DRDO scientist, said participation in sports was a blessing and highlighted the relevance of knowledge in the age of artificial intelligence. He noted that technologies developed by ICAR institutions benefit the entire country.
    Addressing the gathering, Dr Gopal Lal, Acting Director of NAARM, said sports promote a healthy mind and body, which in turn enhances overall work performance. He urged players to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the event.
    The tournament, organised by NAARM from February 10 to 13, features a wide range of sports including athletics, badminton, volleyball, basketball, cricket, football, kabaddi, table tennis, carroms and cycling. Around 885 players—750 men and 135 women—from 28 ICAR institutions are participating.
    Earlier, Dr K Srinivas, Organising Secretary, NAARM, welcomed the gathering.
