Colombo, Feb 11 (.) Australia have been forced into a late change ahead of their opening ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 fixture against Ireland, with captain Mitchell Marsh ruled out after sustaining an injury during training.
According to the International Cricket Council (ICC) website, Marsh suffered a direct blow to the groin earlier this week, resulting in internal testicular bleeding. The team management confirmed that he will require rest and rehabilitation before returning to action.
In response, Steve Smith, who was on standby has been asked to travel to Sri Lanka. Smith, who last featured in T20 Internationals in February 2024 but remains a regular member of Australia’s Test side, will acclimatise with the squad and be available if required.
Australia will now head into their tournament opener against Ireland with a revised leadership setup.
