‎New Delhi, Feb 13 (.) ‎Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke with Bangladeshi leader Tarique Rahman following his party’s victory in the Bangladesh elections, congratulated him, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

‎In a post on X, Modi said, “Delighted to speak with Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections.”

‎The Prime Minister added that he had conveyed his “best wishes and support” to Rahman as he seeks to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.

‎Highlighting the broader context of ties between the two countries, Modi emphasised the enduring partnership between New Delhi and Dhaka. “As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples,” he wrote.

‎India and Bangladesh share a 4,000-kilometre border and a relationship shaped by shared history, including India’s support during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971. Over the decades, the two countries have expanded cooperation in areas such as trade, connectivity, energy, security, and cultural exchange.

‎In recent years, bilateral ties have seen significant development through cross-border infrastructure projects, enhanced power-sharing agreements, and improved regional connectivity linking India’s northeastern states with Bangladesh.

‎Political observers note that leadership-level engagement has played a key role in maintaining stability and advancing mutual interests in South Asia. Modi’s outreach following the election result signals New Delhi’s intent to continue close engagement with Dhaka under its new leadership.
