In a landmark decision, the union Cabinet has approved the transition from the historic North and South Blocks to new administrative complexes named ‘Seva Teerth’ and ‘Kartavya Bhawan.’ The move, announced by union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday, also includes the transformation of the iconic North and South Blocks into the “Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum,” celebrating India’s millennia-old civilization and rich cultural heritage.
Speaking to reporters about the Cabinet’s decisions at Friday’s meeting, Vaishnaw highlighted the significance of the transition, coinciding with the dedication of the new Prime Minister’s Office, now called ‘Seva Teerth,’ by the Prime Minister on February 13, 2026.
“The South and North Blocks were constructed by the British to keep India shackled in colonial chains. Though India achieved independence in 1947, these buildings continued to serve administrative purposes,” Vaishnaw said. “Today, as we conduct the final Cabinet meeting in the South Block chambers, we mark not just a change of venue but a historic moment where our past meets the future.”
The South Block complex has been the nerve center of Indian governance since independence, witnessing critical decisions taken by Cabinets led by 16 Prime Ministers—from Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi. Vaishnaw noted, “The footsteps on these stairs embody decades of nation-building—from the horrors of partition and wars to landmark reforms like DBT, Swachh Bharat Mission, Digital India, GST, and pivotal social justice decisions including the abrogation of Article 370 and laws against triple talaq.” “Decisions on surgical strikes, air strikes, and Operation Sindoor sent a clear message to the world about India’s firm and confident security policy,” he added.
He further emphasized the symbolic importance of the shift: “Moving to modern, technologically advanced, and environmentally friendly offices like Seva Teerth and Kartavya Bhawan reflects our nation’s resolve to embrace a developed future. This transition also reinforces the culture of ‘service’ over ‘power’ in governance.”
The Cabinet’s resolution includes converting the vacated North and South Blocks into the ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum,’ which will celebrate India’s eternal cultural legacy while inspiring future generations. Vaishnaw said, “This museum will be a testament to our timeless heritage, connecting our glorious past with a prosperous future.”
