New Delhi, Feb 17 (.) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav mounted a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a steep decline across law and order, employment, social harmony and governance since 2017.
In a detailed message posted on his WhatsApp channel, Yadav accused the BJP government of presiding over what he described as rising crime, unemployment and social unrest in the state.
“Under BJP rule, Uttar Pradesh has become a hub of crime and wrongdoing,” he said, adding that “since 2017, Uttar Pradesh has become a state of turmoil.”
The former chief minister claimed that fear of criminals and extortion has created an atmosphere resembling curfew-like restrictions in parts of the state. “Unlawful elements dominate across Uttar Pradesh,” he alleged, asserting that people no longer raise questions about security because “there are no expectations left from the BJP government.”
Yadav further charged that “commission-seekers are the ones running the government” and described the current administration as lacking vision. “There is no peace in Uttar Pradesh under BJP rule; unrest prevails everywhere,” he said.
He also alleged that the state has effectively become “one state, one mafia,” and that governance has deteriorated into “misrule.”
Focusing on economic issues, Yadav claimed that millions of jobs have been lost in eight years of BJP rule. He accused the government of burdening citizens through inflation and higher electricity bills. “The BJP government has extracted so much money from the public that people are left unable to pay taxes,” he said.
The Samajwadi Party leader also raised concerns about the condition of Shiksha Mitras (para-teachers), stating they have received neither adequate recognition nor honorarium to live with dignity. He further alleged that farmers are under distress and claimed that policies under the BJP have harmed both their landholdings and incomes.
Yadav accused the BJP of promoting a “negative communal mindset” since 2017 and trading in faith for political gain. He alleged that traditional religious practices, including the Kumbh and Magh Melas, had been disrupted and claimed that revered religious figures had been insulted.
“The BJP trades in faith and demands certificates from religious authorities,” he said, also alleging that traditional ghats had been targeted with bulldozer actions and that pilgrimage sites had been commercialised.
The SP chief alleged that women have felt increasingly unsafe under BJP rule and referred to an incident in which, he claimed, the wife of an opposition leader was insulted in the Assembly.
He also accused the BJP government of committing injustices against the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) community, alleging a record of oppression and excesses.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state and a key battleground in national politics. The BJP, which has been in power in the state since 2017, has consistently maintained that law and order, infrastructure, and welfare delivery have significantly improved under its tenure.
With political rhetoric intensifying, Yadav further asserted that the current government had effectively delivered “its final speech,” signalling the Samajwadi Party’s intent to make governance, employment and social justice central issues in the run-up to upcoming political contests in the state.
