New Delhi, Feb 17 (.) Fourteen international captains, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev have urged the Pakistan government to hold talks with jailed cricketer turned polititian Imran Khan and treat him better.
The joint statement, released to select media outlets, including Cricbuzz, is an official statement for the well-being of the former World Cup-winning captain.
There is representation that there is no information available about the health or safety Imran in jail.
In their one-page request, they said, “We respectfully request the Government of Pakistan to give this to Imran Khan. Immediate, accurate and continuous medical help from a qualified specialist of their choice to address their stated health problem. Humane and dignified conditions in detention in accordance with international standards, with regular visits from close family members. Fair and transparent access to legal processes without unnecessary delays or obstructions.”
Apart from Gavaskar, Kapil and Chappell, other signatories include Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Sir Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh, and John Wright.
“Recent reports regarding his health – particularly the alarming deterioration in his eyesight while in custody – have led to the emergence of a new generation of- and the conditions of his imprisonment over the past two years. The past year and a half has caused us great concern.”
They wrote, “As fellow cricketers who understand the value of fair play, respect and dignity, that goes beyond, We believe that a person of Imran Khan’s stature should be treated with the same respect and basic human values that a former national leader and a global sporting icon deserves.”
The statement expressed deep concern over the alleged treatment meted out to Imran Khan and the conditions in the jail.
It explained how Imran is loved all over the world for his inspiring leadership and contribution to cricket.
“Imran Khan’s contribution to sports is appreciated all over the world. As captain, he led Pakistan to their historic 1992 Cricket World Cup victory- This victory was built on skill, strength, leadership and sportsmanship that inspired generations across borders.
“Many of us competed against him, shared the field with him,
or grew up idolising his all-round ability, charisma and fighting spirit. He is one of the greatest all-rounders and captains the game has ever seen, commanding respect from players, fans and administrators alike.”
He further said, “Apart from cricket, Imran Khan also served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, and it was a difficult period. Politically, he has the honor of being democratically elected to the highest office in his country.”
The former captains concluded their appeal by saying that Pakistani authorities must uphold the principles of decency and justice.
“Cricket has long been a bridge between nations. Our shared history on the field reminds us that enmity ends when the stumps fall- and respect remains. Imran Khan displayed that spirit throughout his career. “We appeal to the authorities to respect this now by upholding the principles of decency and justice.
This appeal is made in the spirit of sportsmanship and common humanity, without any implications for any legal action.”
There are many reports about Imran Khan’s deteriorating health, it is being said that he has lost his eyesight. Jailed in reportedly poor conditions since, he has reportedly been denied access to family members by the Pakistani government and the all-powerful military.
