Washington, Feb 18 (.) The official full trailer for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is finally dropped, signaling the franchise’s much-anticipated leap from streaming to the big screen. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film is set to release exclusively in theatres and IMAX on May 22, expanding the beloved Disney series into a cinematic epic.
Set after the events of ‘Season 3’, the story follows Din Djarin and Grogu as the fledgling New Republic enlists them to hunt down scattered Imperial warlords and war criminals across the galaxy.
According to the official logline, “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu,” as reported by Variety.
One of the trailer’s most notable moments is Pedro Pascal appearing unmasked in multiple scenes. Din Djarin is seen standing exposed before a villain in one tense encounter, and confronting a towering monster in another, highlighting his vulnerability and humanity.
The emotional core of the trailer focuses on Din reflecting on his mortality, acknowledging that Grogu will live for centuries after him, emphasizing his role as adoptive father and mentor.
The trailer also introduces new characters, including Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward, a New Republic officer who asserts, “This isn’t about revenge, it’s about preventing another war.”
Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son, who faces Mando in a colosseum-style battle, while Jonny Coyne plays an Imperial warlord. Fan-favourite Zeb Orrelios appears as a New Republic pilot, and there’s a surprise voice cameo by Martin Scorsese as a four-armed Ardennian food vendor providing crucial information to Mando.
Visually, the film features the return of the ST-70 Gunship (Razor Crest class) as Din and Grogu’s primary vehicle, alongside new and familiar creatures, including a “Baby Greedo” and the mischievous Anzellans.
As reported by Variety, the Mandalorian series follows a lone bounty hunter navigating a post-Empire galaxy after the events of ‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi’, forming an unlikely bond with Grogu. Favreau produced the film alongside Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni.
Reflecting on the project, Favreau said, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
