London, Feb 23 (.) Jessie Buckley continued her remarkable awards season by winning the best actress award at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards in London.
The victory comes just two days after she received the same honour at the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards in Dublin, making Buckley the first Irish performer to win the BAFTA Best Actress award.
She was recognised for her compelling performance as Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao. The award was presented at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank, with Cillian Murphy handing her the trophy.
In her acceptance speech, Buckley reflected on the women who shaped her career and spoke movingly about her daughter, who has been by her side throughout her work.
“This is crazy,” she said. “This really does belong to the women past, present and future who taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently,” she added.
“I share this with my daughter, who has been with me since she was six weeks old, on the road with this,” she added. “It’s the best role of my life being your mum, and I promise to continue to be disobedient so you can belong to a world in all your complete wildness as a young woman,” she said.
The BAFTA ceremony also celebrated other films, with One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, taking home six awards, including Best Film. Other notable winners included Sinner, and several artists received their first BAFTA trophies, marking a night of historic milestones for both established and emerging talent.
