London, Feb 23 (.) Amid the ongoing Ukraine invasion, Mr Nobody Against Putin triumphed at the 79th BAFTA Awards, taking home the Best Documentary award.
Written and directed by David Borenstein, the film exposes the moral complexities and human courage behind a small-town Russian school’s transformation into a war recruitment center, bringing the personal cost of conflict into stark focus.
The lead, Pavel Talankin, who recorded much of the footage during the conflict, attended the ceremony alongside Borenstein.
While accepting the award, Borenstein praised Pavel’s courage. “Pavel, thank you for showing me that no matter how dark things get, we always have a moral choice. No matter who you are, there is power in action. We want more Mr Nobodies,” he said.
The documentary triumphed over other notable non-fiction films, including 2000 Meters to Andriivka, Apocalypse in the Tropics, Cover-Up, and The Perfect Neighbor.
Earlier in the evening, Robert Aramayo pulled off one of the most surprising wins in BAFTA history, clinching Best Actor for I Swear. Aramayo beat heavyweights such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Ethan Hawke, Jesse Plemons, and Michael B. Jordan. Visibly emotional, he admitted he was still processing the moment and described the surreal experience of standing alongside actors he had long admired.
The BAFTA night concluded with ‘One Battle After Another’ dominating the ceremony, taking home six awards including Best Film and Best Director. The event was streamed live on Lionsgate Play.
