Hyderabad, Feb 26 (.) Uruguay women’s national hockey team arrived here on Wednesday for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, aiming to secure a historic maiden berth in the prestigious tournament.
The eight-nation qualifiers, scheduled from March 8 to 14, will determine three spots for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup to be jointly hosted by Belgium and Netherlands.
Uruguay, popularly known as the “Cimarronas”, entered the competition with growing confidence following an impressive run of form that included a runners-up finish at the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2 and their first-ever medal at the 2025 Pan American Cup.
Led by captain Belén Barreiro, the team is focused on taking it one match at a time.
“We are very excited to be here at Hyderabad for the qualifiers. We have been preparing for this tournament since last year and have had some intense training sessions over the last few weeks. We will give our 100 percent,” Barreiro said.
Uruguay face a challenging Pool B campaign, beginning with a clash against hosts India women’s national hockey team, on March 8. They will then take on Wales women’s national hockey team on March 9 before concluding their group fixtures against Scotland women’s national hockey team on March 11.
Uruguay will be hoping their recent progress and momentum translate into success as they attempt to script history by qualifying for their first Hockey Women’s World Cup.
