New Delhi, Feb 27 (.) India’s automobile market maintained a strong momentum in the third quarter of FY 2025-26, with the Western Zone emerging as the top-performing region across vehicle categories, according to the latest data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released here on Friday.
Passenger vehicle (PV) sales touched 12.76 lakh units during the October-December quarter, reflecting a steady consumer demand across urban and semi-urban markets. The Western Zone led the segment with 4.21 lakh units, accounting for a significant share of total sales.
Among states and union Territories, Maharashtra recorded the highest passenger vehicle sales at 1.58 lakh units in Q3 FY26. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, underlining the continued dominance of large, consumption-driven states in the PV segment.
Two-wheeler sales remained the backbone of India’s automobile industry, with total sales reaching 56.96 lakh units in the third quarter. The Western Zone once again led with 19.06 lakh units sold. Uttar Pradesh emerged as the top state in this category, registering 8.62 lakh units during the quarter.
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Bihar followed, highlighting strong rural and semi-urban demand.
The three-wheeler segment recorded sales of 2.15 lakh units nationwide in Q3 FY26. The Western Zone led regional sales with 0.68 lakh units. Gujarat topped the country in three-wheeler sales with 0.25 lakh units, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Bihar. The performance reflects steady demand in goods and passenger carrier categories, particularly in economically active states.
Commercial vehicle (CV) sales stood at 2.90 lakh units during the quarter, driven by infrastructure activity and logistics demand. The Western Zone again led with 1.11 lakh units sold. Maharashtra recorded the highest CV sales at 0.46 lakh units, followed by Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Overall, the data indicates that western India continues to serve as a key growth engine for the automobile sector, supported by strong industrial activity, infrastructure development and high vehicle penetration.
Meanwhile, populous states such as Uttar Pradesh are playing a pivotal role in driving two-wheeler growth, reflecting sustained mobility demand across segments.
The Q3 performance underscores broad-based growth across categories, with regional concentration in the western belt and strong participation from large northern and southern states shaping India’s evolving automobile landscape.
