New Delhi, Mar 1 (.) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday called on the Indian government to clearly articulate its position on the escalating conflict in West Asia, urging transparency, diplomatic engagement, and a firm commitment to peace amid mounting global tensions.
In a statement issued as hostilities intensify across the region, Yadav said the government must make its stance unequivocally clear. “In these circumstances of deadly attacks and war affecting everyone- from the most prominent individuals to ordinary citizens- the government of our country should clarify its stance on this international issue and state whether it stands with war or with peace,” he said. “As a neutral nation, it must also explain what diplomatic efforts it is making to stop the war and restore peace.”
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also emphasized the need for careful verification of wartime information, particularly reports of casualties.
“Our government should verify, at every possible level, the news related to those killed in the war and present the truth to the public,” Yadav said. “Wartime news is often part of strategy, which is why it needs confirmation.”
He cautioned against the spread of misinformation, noting that conflicting claims and propaganda often accompany major military confrontations.
Yadav’s remarks come as hostilities escalate sharply in West Asia, drawing multiple countries into the conflict and raising global concerns about regional stability. The situation has intensified following reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, in airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel – a development that has sent shockwaves through the region and beyond.
The reported strike has significantly heightened tensions, with fears of a broader regional war involving major global powers. Expressing anguish over the human cost of the conflict, Yadav said the crisis goes beyond geopolitics. “It is deeply tragic that humanity itself is being killed along with human beings,” he said.
India has traditionally maintained a delicate diplomatic balance in West Asia, nurturing strategic ties with multiple countries across the region while advocating dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes. Yadav’s intervention adds to the growing chorus of political voices seeking clarity on India’s position as the conflict threatens to destabilize a region critical to global energy supplies and international security.
