New Delhi, Mar 2 (.) Vijender Gupta, speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, on Monday said that power is not a privilege but a sacred public trust that must be exercised for the welfare of the last citizen, while addressing students of the Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership (IIDL) during their visit to the Assembly.
Welcoming students to the Vidhan Sabha, Gupta said the strength of democracy lies not only in laws but in the ethical foundation of those who serve the nation.
He urged the students to view their future roles with responsibility and humility, describing them as architects of India’s destiny.
The visit was organised as part of IIDL’s field study programme in the national capital to provide students first-hand exposure to legislative functioning and governance.
Gupta lauded the initiative of Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, stating that institutions dedicated to nurturing democratic leadership are vital for strengthening the Republic.
In his address, the Speaker underscored the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’, saying India’s path to becoming a developed nation is rooted in inclusive and transparent governance.
He stressed that progress requires leaders with integrity, commitment to constitutional values and the courage to take decisions in the national interest.
Sharing insights into the functioning of the Assembly, Gupta highlighted that debate, deliberation and scrutiny form the bedrock of democracy.
He said the legislative process ensures that government decisions reflect public aspirations and added that discipline and mutual respect within the House are essential to reinforcing democratic values.
Addressing aspiring politicians, civil servants and policy professionals, he called upon the younger generation to place national interest above personal gain.
He said technological and economic advancement must be guided by ethical leadership and sensitivity to ensure that development remains inclusive.
Gupta also highlighted the Assembly’s transition into a fully paperless and solar-powered “green legislature” through the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA).
He announced that the Assembly building would soon be developed as a heritage site open to the public to preserve the spirit of democracy.
He further referred to his proposal for a National Legislative Index (NLI) to assess the performance of legislators, stating that the initiative is gaining traction at the national level.
The session concluded with an interactive dialogue, with students expressing appreciation for the opportunity to engage with the Speaker and gain practical insights into democratic governance. . PKJ KK
