Madrid, March 4 (.) The United States did not notify its allies before launching military operations against Iran, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on Wednesday.
“No allies have been informed, and no attempts have been made to involve the United Nations,” Albares told RTVE radio when asked about Washington’s coordination prior to the bombing.
The statement from Spanish Foreign Minister come as US President Donald Trump threatened to halt all trade with Spain after Madrid denied the US permission to use its military bases for the Iran operation.
Speaking at the White House, Trump called Spain “terrible” and said, “We don’t want anything to do with Spain… we’re going to cut off all trade.”
Trump did not disclose how his administration would enforce trade restrictions against a European union member state but his remarks has added tensions to an already strained relations including disputes over Spain’s refusal to meet his demand for NATO allies to increase defence spending.
“I could tomorrow, or today, even better, stop everything having to do with Spain, all business having to do with Spain,” Trump said on Tuesday. He and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent asserted that US law permits an embargo on products imported from Spain.
Trump also expressed frustration at Spain for refusing to raise defence spending to 5% of its GDP, unlike several other European countries that have complied with his demands.
Spain’s government said that any review of its trade relationship with the US must respect the autonomy of private companies, international law, and existing EU-US agreements. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who met Trump on Tuesday, reminded the president that Spain is part of the EU, and any trade deals with the bloc must include Madrid.
