Los Angeles, Jan 12 (.) ‘Owen Cooper’ made Golden Globes history on Sunday night, becoming the ‘youngest-ever’ winner of the award for male actor in a supporting role on television. At just 16, the Adolescence star surpassed Chris Colfer, who was 20 when he won for Glee in 2010, confirms Variety.
The win also makes Cooper the second-youngest male Golden Globe winner of all time. The record-holder remains Ricky Schroder, who was 9 when he won new star of the year for The Champ in 1980.
“Standing here at the Golden Globes does not feel real whatsoever,” Cooper said during his acceptance speech, drawing laughter from the audience.
“What an incredible journey me and my family have been through. We are forever grateful for what these people have done for me and my family.”
Cooper reflected on his early acting experience, sharing that he was once the only boy in his drama class. While he admitted it was “embarrassing,” he said he pushed through and continues to learn every day, especially from the actors in the room.
The Golden Globe follows another historic milestone for Cooper, who recently won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie, making him the youngest male acting winner in Emmy history. His performance as Jamie Miller in Netflix’s Adolescence marked his breakout role, as per Variety.
In the supporting actor category, Cooper beat out Ashley Walters (Adolescence), Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), Tramell Tillman (Severance), and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus).
Adolescence has emerged as a major awards contender. At the Emmys, the series won best limited series, best actor for Stephen Graham, and best supporting actress for Erin Doherty, in addition to Cooper’s win.
Cooper has also received the Critics’ Choice Award and the Gotham TV Award and is currently nominated for a SAG-AFTRA Actor Award.
The series earned five Golden Globe nominations this year, including nods for Cooper and Walters, Stephen Graham for best actor in a limited series, Erin Doherty for supporting actress, and best limited series.
The supporting actor category spans all television genres, including comedy, drama, and limited series. Last year’s winner was Tadanobu Asano for Shōgun.
The 83rd Golden Globe Awards are hosted by Nikki Glaser and air live on CBS from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The telecast is produced by Dick Clark Productions, with Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner serving as producers.
