Amaravati, Mar 1 (.) Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a strategic hub for rare earths and titanium-based minerals, aiming to reduce India’s dependence on China and capture a growing global market.
Accorddng to the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC), the state holds the second-largest beach sand mineral reserves in India, accounting for nearly 25 percent of the country’s resources, with high concentrations of ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and monazite—the latter a key source of rare earth elements (REEs).
Beach sand minerals are essential for high-value industries: titanium dioxide and titanium metal for aerospace and industrial applications, and rare earth oxides for EV motors, wind turbines, defence systems, and consumer electronics.
India currently imports more than 75 percent of its titanium dioxide requirements and almost all rare earth-based materials, largely from China, exposing manufacturers to supply chain and geopolitical risks.
The Corporation has secured approvals for 10 major coastal deposits across Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Krishna districts.
Officials plan to build a complete value chain—from extraction and mineral separation to downstream refining and high-tech manufacturing of titanium and rare earth products.
Strategic advantages strengthen the state’s business case: six operational ports with over 330 million tonnes of cargo capacity, industrial corridors such as the Vizag–Chennai Industrial Corridor, robust power and logistics infrastructure, and proximity to mineral-rich coastal belts.
Industry analysts highlight the opportunity: Andhra Pradesh could emerge as India’s primary hub for titanium dioxide pigment, titanium metal, rare earth oxides, and permanent magnets, supplying aerospace, EV, renewable energy, and defence sectors.
Beyond import substitution, the state is well-positioned to attract global investment and generate significant export revenue as manufacturers seek non-Chinese critical minerals.
With its mineral wealth, industrial infrastructure, and strategic coastal location, Andhra Pradesh is set to become a cornerstone of India’s critical minerals and advanced manufacturing ecosystem, powering the nation’s next wave of industrial growth.
