Dhaka, Feb 12 (.) Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, underscoring his enthusiasm for the long-awaited vote since the July Uprising, said he had been waiting for this day expectantly for the past one and a half years, and hoped for a fair election, while Chief Advisor Md Yunus hailed the polls as a moment of national joy and renewal.
“Today, the election is underway. A congenial atmosphere for voting is prevailing. I have received information from across the country, and as per my reports, voting is going on peacefully everywhere,” the COAS said after casting his vote at Adamjee Cantonment College polling station.
“I urge all voters to go to polling centres and cast their votes without fear. Today is a very important day for us,” he added, expressing his commitment to ensuring a fair election.
The army chief also praised the role of media personnel, noting that while they do not get to vote, they are playing a crucial role in the polls by informing the public about the situation and encouraging citizens to cast their ballots.
Hailing the vote, Yunus, while casting his vote in the morning, told reporters “This is a day of great joy. Today is the birthday of a new Bangladesh. We will celebrate this birthday throughout the day,” and urged citizens participate in the referendum without fear.
“From today, at every step, we have gained the opportunity to build a new Bangladesh,” he said, adding “Voting for a candidate is important, but the referendum is very important. The whole of Bangladesh will change.”
