Kolkata, Jan 23 (.) Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Ashwini Despande pointed out that the journey from training to performance is frequently shaped by factors beyond an artist’s control, making chance a crucial element in a performer’s career.
Addressing the gathering at the Kolkata Literary Meet 2026, Deshpande observed that while rigorous riyaaz and discipline are indispensable, they do not alone determine who eventually reaches the stage. “Becoming a performer is a very chance thing,” she said, underlining on the uneven pathways artists navigate.
The session highlighted the ongoing interplay between the Guru-Shishya Parampara (teacher-student relationship) and formal institutional training. She stressed that while deep raga training still relies on the traditional one-on-one method, institutions serve an equally important purpose, like nurturing attentive listeners, music scholars and culturally literate audiences. Though not every student may perform professionally, a discerning audience keeps the art form honest and vibrant.
