New Delhi, Jan 9 (.) BJP MLA from Malviya Nagar, Satish Upadhyay, raised the issue of contaminated water supply on day five of the Delhi Assembly’s Winter Session on Friday.
Addressing the Assembly, Upadhyay raised the issue under rule 280 and said that residents of B-3 Block in Malviya Nagar have been receiving contaminated water for the past two and a half years following metro construction work in the area. He alleged that despite repeated complaints, the problem has remained unresolved from the previous government till the present.
The BJP legislator further informed the House that several areas, including Adchini village, Arjun Nagar, Masjid Moth, Begumpur, Khirki Gaon and Hauz Rani are facing similar issues of contaminated water supply.
Upadhyay demanded that officials be directed to identify the reasons behind the problem. He pointed out that water pipelines in many areas have not been replaced for the last 25 to 30 years, even though the normal lifespan of a water pipeline is around 10 years.
Due to old and damaged pipelines, dirty water is mixing with household water connections, which he described as a serious public health concern.
Raising another issue, the Malviya Nagar MLA said that in his constituency, one water tap is shared by three to four households in several localities. He urged the government to direct officials to ensure the installation of individual water connections in every household.
Upadhyay also flagged unequal water distribution in his constituency, stating that while some areas receive water supply for four hours, others get water for only two hours. He stressed the need for rational and equitable distribution of water across all localities.
Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Friday presented a detailed statement in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, saying that problems such as contaminated water, leaking pipelines and irregular supply are the result of years of neglect by previous governments, not recent failures. Mn
Parvesh Verma said Delhi has around 16,000 km of water pipelines, many of which are old and damaged. More than 5,200 km of pipelines are over 30 years old, while about 2,700 km are between 20 and 30 years old. This has led to frequent leakages, pipeline bursts, contamination risks and water losses of up to 55 per cent.
“In just 11 months, the current government has approved 94 major water and sewerage projects worth Rs. 7,212 crore. These include water pipelines, sewer networks and sewage treatment plants.” He added. . PKJ .
