Hyderabad, Mar 2 (.) Cochlear on Monday announced the launch of Cochlear™ Nucleus® Nexa® System in India, describing it as the world’s first and only smart cochlear implant system, coinciding with World Hearing Day.
In a release, the company said the new system is the first hearing implant to feature internal memory and upgradeable firmware, enabling users to receive future technological updates without replacing the implant.
The device also includes onboard diagnostics, dynamic power management, and a new RF link technology aimed at improving performance and battery efficiency.
According to company data, around 63 million people in India—about 6.3 per cent of the population—live with significant hearing impairment. Studies indicate that over one lakh babies are born annually with some form of hearing deficiency, with four in every 1,000 newborns affected by severe to profound hearing loss.
Vandana Pisharody, Regional General Manager, South Asia and Southeast Asia, said the launch marked a significant step in advancing hearing care solutions in India.
Chief Technology Officer Jan Janssen said the system builds on more than 40 years of implant reliability and incorporates a new chipset designed to support future innovations.
The Nucleus Nexa System also allows users’ personalised hearing settings to be stored within the implant, enabling quick synchronisation with replacement sound processors.
Cochlear said the system has been available in India since March 1, 2026.
