Bengaluru, Feb 7 (.) Dhakshineswar Suresh delivered a commanding performance to help India level the Davis Cup tie 1-1 against the Netherlands, defeating Jesper De Jong in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
The 25-year-old from Madurai, ranked 465th in the world, combined power, composure, and tactical intelligence to secure a crucial win on a high-pressure stage.
Suresh started confidently, holding his opening service game with powerful serves and aggressive baseline play. The first set was closely contested, with both players exchanging leads multiple times.
Suresh eventually broke De Jong in the 10th game after saving two earlier set points, clinching the set 6-4 to the delight of teammates, including Sumit Nagal, who celebrated with cheers and fist pumps.
Set two saw both players trading games until 4-3, but Suresh maintained focus and composure, converting his match points to seal a 7-5 victory. His mix of aggressive baseline play and occasional serve-and-volley tactics continually pressured De Jong, who struggled to convert his limited opportunities.
Statistically, Suresh dominated key areas. He scored 66 points to De Jong’s 58, hit nine aces compared to seven, and won 82 per cent of first serve points and 72 per cent of second serve points. He converted two of seven break points, while De Jong was unable to convert his single opportunity.
Suresh’s ability to execute on crucial points made the difference in the tightly contested match. Despite facing limited opportunities and a few unlucky points, he showed poise and efficiency under pressure. His performance underlined his growing stature on the international stage, even as his world ranking does not fully reflect his potential.
