New Delhi, Jan 23 (.) AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj on Friday said that Delhi is grappling with a severe water shortage, with nearly 60 percent of the population likely to be affected until February 4. He attributed the crisis to two primary factors: the shutdown of key water treatment plants due to high ammonia levels in the Yamuna and the poorly timed maintenance closure of the Munak canal.
Bhardwaj explained that the elevated ammonia pollution, allegedly from industrial units in Haryana, forced the closure of the Wazirabad and Chandrawal treatment plants, resulting in a loss of 200 million gallons per day (MGD).
Simultaneously, maintenance work on the Carrier Line Channel, which carries water from the Munak canal, cut off an additional 326 MGD from several other plants.
He stated that the combined loss of roughly 526 MGD represents a significant portion of the city’s supply.
Bhardwaj added that while the city receives about 250 MGD from Ganga-based plants, it was insufficient to cover the deficit.
He criticized the decision to undertake canal maintenance during this period and noted that past warnings from his party about ammonia pollution were dismissed.
The AAP leader urged Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to assist the current BJP-led city government in managing the situation.
