Adelaide, Jan 6 (.) Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from next week’s Adelaide International, citing fitness concerns as he continues his preparations for the Australian Open.
In an Instagram story addressed to fans in Adelaide, the 24-time Grand Slam champion said he was “not quite physically ready to compete” at the ATP 250 event, describing the decision as “personally very disappointing”.
Djokovic noted that Adelaide holds special significance for him, having won the title there two years ago, and said returning to the city “truly felt like playing at home”. However, the Serbian added that his immediate priority is gearing up for the season’s first Grand Slam.
“My focus is now on my preparation for the Australian Open and I look forward to arriving in Melbourne soon and seeing all the tennis fans in Australia,” he said.
The 38-year-old had intended to use the tournament, starting January 12, as preparation for the season’s first Grand Slam at Melbourne Park, where he aims to claim a record-extending 11th Australian Open title and his 25th major championship.
