New Delhi, Feb 18 (.) Galgotias University has been directed to vacate the India AI Summit Expo premises following a controversy over the display of a Chinese-made robotic dog during the ongoing summit in Delhi. Government sources said the action was taken after reports emerged that the robot, manufactured in China, was showcased at the event.
The controversy erupted after it was alleged that the Unitree Go2 robotic dog was exhibited under the name “Orion,” leading to criticism on social media. The university faced accusations of presenting imported Chinese technology as an indigenous innovation at the India AI Summit 2026.
Amid the backlash, the government reportedly instructed the university to immediately clear the expo site.
In response, Galgotias University issued a clarification, stating that neither the faculty nor the students had claimed to have built the robotic dog. The university said the device was purchased from Unitree, a global robotics company based in China, strictly for academic purposes.
“We at Galgotias, faculty and students, are deeply pained by the propaganda campaign against our university. We would like to clearly state that the robotic programming is part of our endeavour to make students learn AI programming and develop and deploy real-world skills using globally available tools and resources, given that developing AI talent is the need of the hour,” the university said in a statement issued Tuesday after facing criticism online.
It added that its vision is centered on student learning and innovation, and that students are provided access to modern technologies to gain practical exposure and prepare for the future.
The statement further said that spreading negativity could harm the morale of students who are working hard to innovate and build skills using global technologies.
The issue has sparked debate at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, with questions being raised over the presentation of foreign-made technology at a major national AI platform.
