Washington, Jan 21 (.) US President Donald Trump has rejected French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for an emergency G7 meeting, amid growing tensions between Washington and its European allies over Trump’s push to acquire Greenland.
Trump said he would not attend a proposed meeting of G7 leaders to discuss the war in Ukraine. The meeting had been suggested by Macron, though the French leader later clarified that no such gathering would take place this week.
Speaking to reporters after completing the first year of his second term, Trump questioned Macron’s political future while explaining his decision. “No, I wouldn’t do that… because Emmanuel is not going to be there very long and there’s no longevity there,” he said.
The remarks come after Trump posted on Truth Social a screenshot of a private message from Macron, in which the French President invited him to attend a G7 meeting after the World Economic Forum (WEF).
In the message, Macron said France and the United States were aligned on Syria and could “do great things” on Iran, but expressed confusion over Trump’s stance on Greenland.
“My friend, we are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” Macron wrote, proposing a G7 meeting in Paris after Davos and a private dinner with Trump before his return to the United States.
At a White House briefing, Trump was asked about the message and the proposed emergency G7 meeting in Paris that he had earlier made public. Asked whether he would consider attending, Trump replied flatly, “No, I wouldn’t do that.”
Macron later said that there was no G7 summit scheduled for this week. “No meeting is scheduled. The French presidency is willing to hold one,” he said after addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Macron at the World Economic Forum sharply criticised the United States’ trade practice, saying Washington’s tariff threats “openly aim to weaken and subordinate Europe” and are being used as leverage against territorial sovereignty.
