Los Angeles, Jan 21 (.) Margot Robbie has shared that working on Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights” created a deep emotional connection between her and co-star Jacob Elordi.
The adaptation casts Robbie and Elordi as the famously tempestuous lovers Catherine and Heathcliff, reports PEOPLE.
In a new cast interview with Fandango, Robbie, 35, reflected on collaborating with her fellow Australian star.
“I’m so co-dependent with people I work with and I love everyone so much and I’m always that person who’s so devastated when a job’s over and I never want it to end,” said the Oscar nominee. “I think I developed that quite quickly with Jacob, too.”
Robbie recalled that during the early days of filming, Elordi was frequently nearby as she worked, quietly observing her from a distance in a manner that echoed Heathcliff’s brooding presence. Director Emerald Fennell clarified that this behaviour was not directed by her and eventually had to ask him to give Robbie space.
Robbie admitted that by the third day of filming, she instinctively sought Elordi’s presence, and when he was absent, she felt unmoored and disoriented, likening the sensation to a child separated from a cherished comfort.
Elordi described the connection as mutually compelling, emphasising their shared fascination and expressing admiration for Robbie’s artistry, noting that observing her minute gestures and rituals on set was both instructive and captivating.
“Wuthering Heights”, costarring Shazad Latif, Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Charlotte Mellington and Owen Cooper, is co-produced by Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, the same company behind 2023’s Barbie and Saltburn. The actress-producer works alongside husband Tom Ackerley.
Speaking with Fandango, Elordi and the cast also recalled filming in the English countryside, even playing Kate Bush’s song “Wuthering Heights” on the Moors to get in the spirit.
“It was this really sort of profound thing, being Heathcliff and Cathy,” said the actor, “watching the sunset on the Moors as the spirit of [these] characters have for the last 200 years. You can almost imagine that the spirit of this love that Brontë created is floating around there. It really did feel like we were catching little pieces of that unrequited love.”
“Wuthering Heights” would hit the theatres February 13. . . .
