Jerusalem, Feb 26 (.) India and Israel are set to finalise a mutually beneficial free trade agreement (FTA), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday, underscoring the growing depth of bilateral ties while asserting that the two nations will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism.
“To promote mutual investment, we signed a Bilateral Investment Agreement last year and will soon finalise a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement as well,” Modi said during a joint press briefing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Modi also reaffirmed the two nations’ stance against terrorism. “India and Israel stood shoulder-to-shoulder in opposing terrorism and its supporters, and we will continue to do so,” he said, adding, “India and Israel are completely clear that there is no place for terrorism in the world.”
The Prime Minister highlighted an agreement for the use of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Israel, describing it as a step forward in financial connectivity between the two countries.
“India-Israel relationship is founded on a strong bedrock of deep trust, shared democratic values, and human sensitivities,” Modi said.
Modi recalled his first visit to Israel nine years ago, noting, “Once again, setting foot on the historic land of Israel is a moment of pride and deep emotion for me. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to address Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset. I was also honoured with the Speaker of the Knesset Medal. I sincerely thank the Knesset Speaker, my friend Prime Minister Netanyahu, and the people of Israel for this honour.”
Speaking alongside Modi, Netanyahu shared a personal anecdote, saying, “I think our first or second date was at an Indian restaurant in Tel Aviv. And I have to tell you, there is no question, first of all, the food was unbelievable… I want to tell you how deeply and from the heart we feel both our personal friendship and the friendship between our governments and our peoples. May this continue to flourish and strengthen, as I’m sure it will as a result of this visit.”
President Herzog described India as “an essential part of a great future for the Middle East,” noting India’s economic growth and global attention. “With an expression of compassion and alliance with Israel and its story, I believe that India is an essential part of a great future for the Middle East, and Israel can be an essential part of the great future of India,” he said.
Herzog emphasised collaboration between Indian and Israeli universities and encouraged student exchanges, noting the potential to “transform the entire geostrategic situation to the advantage of the Global South.”
The Israeli President concluded by acknowledging India’s global leadership in multiple fields and expressing enthusiasm for PM Modi’s visit, stating, ”We know that you lead the world in many fields, and we are happy and excited that you are here with us.”
