Dhaka, Dec 22 (.) Inqilab Moncho has demanded the immediate resignation of the interim government’s Home Advisor Jahangir Aslam Choudhary, his special assistant and Law Advisor Asif Nazrul, due to their lack of progress amidst their investigation into the killing of its convener, Sharif Osman Hadi.
In a press release issued on Dec 22, the cultural organisation insisted that the advisors should publicly disclose the reasons behind the alleged security lapse before they step down.
Presenting a three-point demand in the statement, the group highlighted a set of demands concerning the investigation and trial of Hadi’s killing, which has led to massive socio-political turmoil in the capital.
The organisation called for judicial proceedings to be concluded within a maximum span of 30 working days through a speedy trial tribunal, and also urged the interim government to engage with international investigation agencies, such as the FBI and Scotland Yard, to guarantee a transparent and credible investigation.
In addition, it demanded the identification, arrest and prosecution of so-called “Awami terrorists” allegedly operating within the country’s civil and military intelligence circles.
The demands came as Law Adviser Asif Nazrul released an online message where he said the case would be tried under a speedy trial mechanism.
Taking to Facebook, he cited Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002, stating that the trial would be completed within a maximum of 90 days after submission of the police report.
Inqilab Moncho also took to the streets of Dhaka on Monday, Dec 22, staging a protest procession to press for the immediate arrest of those responsible.
The march began at the Shahbagh intersection at around 3:20pm, moved through the TSC area and concluded at the Central Shaheed Minar, drawing a sizeable crowd of supporters.
Protesters chanted anti-AL and anti-India slogans invoking calls for freedom, renewed calls for bolstering national sovereignty, while constantly chanting Hadi’s name.
Earlier in the day, Abdullah Al Jaber, the platform’s member secretary, addressed an emergency press conference outside the National Museum.
He warned that a broader movement to topple the interim government would be launched if justice was not delivered.
He said justice must precede any electoral process, insisting that no election could be held without accountability for the killing.
Jaber reiterated that activists would maintain a constant presence on the streets until those who carried out the killing, as well as those accused of shielding them, were brought before the courts of law.
