Tehran, Jan. 24 (.) Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Friday denounced a European Parliament resolution criticizing Tehran over human rights violations during recent unrest, calling it “meddlesome and irresponsible.”
The European Parliament on Thursday expressed “full solidarity” with Iranians, accused the government of rights violations, and called for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps to be designated a terrorist organization.
In a statement, Iran said the resolution contained “false and incorrect” claims and lacked moral authority, citing the EU’s support for sanctions, compliance with US embargoes, and alleged complicity with Israel in military actions.
“Through supporting the imposition of cruel sanctions and obeying the US illegal embargoes on Iran and complicity with Israel in the June military aggression against the country,” the European Parliament failed to have any moral eligibility to preach about human rights, it said.
Iran is obligated to protect its citizens’ security, public order, and national sovereignty against any terrorist act or foreign threat and intervention, and will take reciprocal actions in response to any “illegal and interventionist” decision or stance regarding its armed and security forces, it added.
Protests began on December 28, 2025 in several Iranian cities over the sharp depreciation of the Rial. The Iranian government has expressed its willingness to address economic grievances but has also warned against violence, vandalism and unrest.
Initially peaceful, the protests gradually escalated into violence, leading to casualties and damage to public property, mosques, government buildings and banks, especially on Jan. 8-9, for which Tehran has blamed the United States and Israel.
Recently, US President Donald Trump said that Iran is under close surveillance and a “massive fleet” is being deployed to the Gulf region, amid escalating tensions over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One en route from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to Joint Base Andrews near Washington, Trump warned Iran against further provocations.
“I said, if you hang those people, you’re going to be hit harder than you’ve ever been hit. It will make what we did to your Iran nuclear look like peanuts,” he said.
Trump added that a significant naval presence was heading to the region but suggested military action might not be necessary. “Maybe we won’t have to use it … we have a lot of ships going that direction, just in case. We’ll see what happens,” he said.
US media reported that the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its strike group were diverted from manoeuvres in the South China Sea to West Asia last week, Al Jazeera reported.
Trump, speaking to CNBC on Wednesday, said he hoped further U.S. military action could be avoided but stressed that Washington would respond if Tehran resumed its nuclear programme. “If they do it, it’s going to happen again,” he said.
