Tokyo, Feb 27 (.) Japan and Britain agreed to establish a framework for mutual support in the event of “significant malicious cyber activities” at the 9th Japan-UK Cyber Dialogue held in Tokyo on Friday, officials said.
The dialogue was co-chaired by Fumito Miyake, Japan’s ambassador in charge of cyber policy and deputy director-general of the Foreign Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Andrew Whittaker, head of the Cyber Policy Department at Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
The talks followed Japan’s enactment last year of its Cyber Response Capability Strengthening Act and related legislation, as well as the adoption of a new national cybersecurity strategy.
The two sides exchanged views on “a wide range of issues,” including their respective cybersecurity strategies and policies, the Japanese foreign ministry said.
Building on the “Japan-UK Strategic Cyber Partnership” agreed in January during a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the officials discussed cooperation on “deterring and defending against cyber threats,” coordination in international fora, including the United Nations, and cybersecurity capacity building.
Both sides confirmed they would continue to hold the Japan-UK Cyber Dialogue, the statement said.
Officials from Japan’s National Cybersecurity Office, National Police Agency, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Defense and the Japan Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center took part in the meeting.
British participants included representatives from the Foreign Office, Department for Business and Trade, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and the National Cyber Security Centre.
