Washington, Jan 17 (.) Actress Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that she lost the opportunity to play Sharon Tate in ‘Quentin Tarantino’s’ 2019 film ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, partly due to online backlash over her appearance, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lawrence recalled that some people online felt she wasn’t “pretty enough” for the role, which eventually went to Margot Robbie.
“Well, he did, and then everybody was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,’” Lawrence said. She added, “Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story this way for so long that I believe it. No, but I’m pretty sure that happened.”
Podcast host Horowitz suggested that the internet “would never do that,” to which Lawrence jokingly replied, “No, those sweetie pies?”
Earlier in the conversation, taped live on January 7 at 92NY, Lawrence also revealed that she had rejected a role in Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight.
“The Jennifer Jason Leigh part was originally written for you, I believe,” Horowitz said. “I turned it down, which I should not have done,” Lawrence responded with a laugh.
Debra Tate, Sharon Tate’s sister, had commented on the casting in 2017, stating that Robbie was her preferred choice due to her “physical beauty and the way she carries herself,” noting that Lawrence was “just, I don’t know, not pretty enough to play Sharon,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Tarantino later clarified in interviews that while he considered Lawrence for the Sharon Tate role, he had also explored casting her as Squeaky Fromme, a part that ultimately went to Dakota Fanning.
“I couldn’t be happier with what Dakota Fanning did, it’s one of the best performances in the movie,” he said. Tarantino also praised Lawrence as “a very nice person” and expressed respect for her as an actress.
